vape (2)

verb; back formation back formation through clipping
to breathe in the vapor from an e-cigarette

The term vape came into usage in recent years after the e-cigarette was introduced into the American market in 2007. E-cigarettes release vaporized nicotine that the user inhales. In order to describe how these new products called e-cigarette were used, the word vapor was clipped to form the word vape. Since e-cigarettes are supposedly a less harmful delivery mechanism of nicotine than typical methods of smoking tobacco, as e-cigarettes have gained popularity so has the term vape, especially among younger generations and smokers. The process of vaping is already beginning to metonymically describe the e-cigarette to the point where an e-cigarette may commonly be called a vape. http://www.vapeonliquids.com/pages/about-us
