NANO

noun; clipping
A field of chemistry that deals with the manufacture, manipulation, and use of tiny molecules on the scale of 10-9 meters. (exciting new research in the nano field) The newspaper writer was seeking a word that would fit in the space provided for a headline, while still conveying the subject clearly. The work 'nano' seems to accomplish this, because it is well known that Rice University is involved with nanotechnology. The phrase 'Rice's nano studies' conveys that that nanotechnology is being referred to, due to the mention of Rice and studies. 'Nanotechnology' is formed from the prefix 'nano-', which means 1x10-9 in the SI unit system. In this case, the 'nano-' refers to 10-9 meters, which is roughly the size of these molecules. 'Technology' refers to finding ways to manufacture, manipulate, and use these tiny molecules.

Rice's nano studies offer hope.
