Ident

noun; clipping
A shortened version of the singular noun 'identification,' perhaps law enforcement or security jargon. The TV character in the citation below supposedly used to be a police officer. This word can probably only be used to mean identifying documentation like a driver's license or passport rather than another use of 'identification,' such as the concept. Presumably 'principle of identification' would not be expressed as 'principle of ident.'

Boyd: But he left without her — in a hurry. We found his car just south of the border with some fake ident in the glove box.
Etymology : Clipping of 'identification', meaning something that uniquely shows information about a person or thing.
