Elbowgate

  1. compounding; noun
During the NBA playoffs of 2010, Lebron James reported having elbow pain. After a few MRIs, nothing was discovered to be wrong, though his performance was still poor. Fans of the game began referring to this as “elbowgate,” in reference to the Watergate scandal and the way it ended Nixon’s presidency. Was this elbow injury (or supposed injury) going to be the end of James’ career? Evidently, it was not.
Etymology : Splice of the term “Watergate,” which is literally the office building where Nixon’s illegal political espionage was discovered. The “-gate” part of the compound is combined with elbow to create “elbowgate.”

  2. compounding; noun
Barack Obama was accidentally hit in the face by an opponent’s elbow while playing basketball during Thanksgiving 2010. This required 12 stitches in his lip. Again in reference to Nixon’s Watergate scandal, the elbow jab was jokingly called “elbowgate,” as though this injury would be enough to take Obama out of the presidency.
Etymology : Splice of the term “Watergate,” which is literally the office building where Nixon’s illegal political espionage was discovered. The “-gate” part of the compound is combined with elbow to create “elbowgate.”
