Joker

noun; other word formation type metaphor
Term used for a position in football on the punt return team. The joker lines up approximately five yards or more beyond the line of scrimmage between the returner and the down linemen. The usual responsibility of the joker is to help double team the gunner. The joker derives its name from the nature of its position to be somewhat of a wild card position. The joker moves about behind the linemen attempting to disrupt the count of the opposing punt team after they get their count of who each player is assigned to block. The actions and movement of the joker are somewhat unpredictable, just as a joker would act.

:Gunners, expect to be double teamed by the jokers as you work downfield."
Etymology : Agent noun from joke + er.
