Vuvuzela

noun; other word formation type borrowing
A plastic horn that makes a monotone pitched sound, about two feet in length. Became widely recognizable during the 2010 World Cup, as audio from televised games were largely wiped out by the loud sound. Much controversy ensued following the popularization of the vuvuzela, as the horn has begun to be banned at several sporting events, including the 2010 MLS All Star game held in Houston at Reliant Stadium.

"It was hard to hear the whistle because of how loud the vuvuzelas are."
