roids, roid rage

noun; clipping
roids: steroids; particularly anabolic steroids used to ‘bulk up’ muscle mass (note: always appears in plural in this usage) Type of Formation: clipping (roids), compounding (roid rage) Possible Reason Used: Arose as slang abbreviation, likely purely as innovation amongst a steroid user group. The term is a characterizes an in-group, but that group is not necessary a group of steroid users. Merely, the term is familiar to most involved in weight training simply because it is a prevalent subculture of the weight-lifting community and hence knowing the term identifies one, user or not, as part of this broader community. Roids was not likely to have been adopted for secrecy, for there are few other words that may be clipped to ‘roids, and the sale of growth supplements is quite open. The term roid rage is not likely to fall out of fashion because it represents it has a very narrow and practical definition, it describes certain, characteristic behaviors with a specific causation. No such term offers the denotative and connotative value of roid rage for its brevity (the alliteration is also a plus). Thus the word roids is unlikely to fall out of usage soon, it will likely be buoyed into uncharacteristically prolonged usage by its presence in the more specific term roid rage.

I need some roids right now.
