activity in which people crouch in an owl-like form in unusual places to have their picture taken and posted on the Internet.
 
Owling was most likely a response to the act of "planking" in which people lie flat or hang like a plank with rigid bodies in unusual places. People stated crouching and it was noticed that they had an owl-like form, hence came the word owling.
Etymology : This word was formed by adding the suufix -ing to owl,from the Latin word "ulula" (etymonline.com)
