Cupcake, the verb, is usually used when couples flirt. It seems to be used most often in reference to couples who are overly public with their affection, which gives the word a somewhat negative connotation. It is thought that the verb comes from the nickname 'cupcake' people call their loved one.
Etymology : Metonymy of the affectionate nickname "cupcake" used by loved ones. Changed from noun to verb by zero derivation.
