fanfiction

noun Compounding
A fictional piece using characters, settings, and/or situations of a pre-existing work that is written by a fan of this original work and not its creator.

The origins of this word are pretty easy to understand. When fandoms started becoming excited enough about a work of fiction that they were inspired to create their own stories using the same characters and settings, the word choice was fairly intuitive. Here, the writers of the pieces are very big fans of some work of entertainment, and the stories they write are considered fiction. Hence, “fanfiction” was coined.
Etymology : From the roots “fan” (which is likely a clipping of the word “fanatic”) and “fiction.”
