props (3)

noun Blending and clipping
Respect or recognition, usually for a talent or accomplishment.

The phrase “proper respects” was first shortened to the blended term “propers.” The use of the slang term “props” was popularized by rappers who subsequently clipped “propers” into that form. The rise in popularity was related to the rap world's increasing fascination with the mafia, which tends to place great emphasis on the importance of giving and earning respect. The rap community also tends to emphasize the importance of respect, and so the new term “props” appeared often in song lyrics, and eventually spread to the general population, where it has become a quite well-known slang term.
Etymology : Blending of the roots “proper” and “respect” plus the affix “-s” on the root respect, and later clipping.
