planking

verb metaphor
to lie horizontally in a strange or unusual place, with your arms to your side, and toes pointed straight downwards. Usually a picture is taken of the person “planking” and it is uploaded to a social networking site or blog such as facebook, twitter, tumblr, etc. Quite commonly, there is competition between individuals to see who can plank in the most bizarre or unusual places.

The word planking was probably used to describe this behavior because it resembles that of a plank lying atop of something. Because the term planking was coined to describe a visual resemblance between a plank and the person engaging in this type of behavior, this type of word formation process is metaphoric. It is unclear who first coined the term, but it is known around the world as the “lying down game”(Wikipedia)
Etymology : The verb planking was formed by the suffixation of –ing to the noun plank. It is unclear who first coined the term, but it is known around the world as the “lying down game”
