Forking

noun derivation, metaphor
forking-a form of affection between a couple(or friends) in which both people lay horizontally and one person hugs the other from the back. The difference between forking and spooning is usually the male has an erection.

Forking was formed off the analogical model of spooning. Since one person is laying front to back with the other it evokes the image of forks in a drawer fitting perfectly together, thus leading to the formation of the word forking. The word forking was used instead of spooning due to the “forklike” point of the male’s erection while the couple is cuddling. Since the connection between cuddling and two forks fitting together was almost entirely based on imagery, the word formation process was most definitely metaphoric. The term is mostly used by the younger generation(ages 15-30)
Etymology : -suffixation of fork with –ing.
