- This word developed after the actual invention of the "webcam" became more popular through the creation of several videochat programs like Skype, Oovoo, MSN Messenger etc. A similar, more common term to describe this action would be "Videochatting" which is itself a neologism. Most likely, the development of this word arose because people felt the need to specify that they are using a webcam to chat online.
