splooger

noun; sound symbolism
a funnel shaped liquid dispenser A splooger is a funnel shaped device that releases the contained liquid when a button is depressed. In this case, the splooger is used to pour pancake batter. It is a useful tool because one can carefully regulate the amount of batter poured while still doing so quickly. This is important because this pancake man may cook over a thousand flapjacks every morning. The word was based off of the sound that the splooger makes when the button is depressed and the liquid is released. At one point, there was some dissention as to exactly how the word should take form. A new volunteer at this breakfast kitchen tried to circulate the term ‘sploocher’ because he felt it was more accurate. He was sharply reprimanded by the man who originally named the device. It was a good demonstration of how the standardization of a word can be heavily influenced by long-standing traditions and opinions of those in authority.

Dummy! It’s a splooger, not a sploocher!
