the ‘tube

noun; clipping
The website www.youtube.com.

Used by those who are highly aware of internet phenomenon and the website www.youtube.com. Created to mimic the terming of a television as the “(boob) tube” but updated for current technology. Likely localized to usage by young people, as older people might be confused by its similarity to the term “tube” (television) which was popular in the last few decades.
Etymology : Original (non-clipped) version of the noun originated in 2005 with the creation of the website www.youtube.com; the clipped version is very new (c. 2011).
