sliding on one’s belly on the wet ground Penguins are known to slide down icy slopes on their belly because they can move more quickly that way (as opposed to waddling on their feet). Similarly, a human can move quickly while sliding on ground made slippery by rain and mud. The way the friend was speaking, it seemed that he was not the original person to coin this term. I would venture to guess that he picked up this word in grade school or middle school. One reason is that this is the type of activity you might encounter among children, not adults. A more compelling reason, however, is that both roots are native words. We know that children tend to have a vocabulary of primarily native words.
