Gobo

blending and clipping; noun
Derived from the terms "Goes Before Optics". It is a physical template slotted inside, or placed in front of, a lighting source, used to control the shape of emitted light
 
The term comes from the clipping from the first letters of each word in the phrase "goes before optics". The letters of "go","b", and "o" are then blended to together to create the word "gobo'. Gobos are used, with various light sources, to create lighting scenes in a theatrical application or event lighting. Gobos from simple ones to more complicated ones are popular at nightclubs and other musical venues to create moving shapes inconjuction with automated light shows.
Etymology : Uncertain when the term gobo was first used in describing lighting effects.
