- The neologism flying came from the metaphorical use of the modern English word flying to describe the feeling that occurs from smoking weed. Similar terms would be: getting high, buzzing, getting baked etc. The reason behind the development of this meaning for flying isn't really clear beyond the obvious analogical link.
