New York City (if the word “city” used in the vicinity of New York City). The definition varies depending on the region the user of the word is located.
 
In a particular area, the “city” refers to the nearest metropolitan area or the city the speaker or author is present. For instance, in New York City, a person would refer New York City as “the city”. This particular definition is regionally-based and only understood (in common conversations) in a specific location. For example, “the city” does not mean the same thing in the New York area as in the San Francisco area. In Northern California, “the city” means San Francisco.
