Hashtag

verb; noun; compounding
A ‘#’ sign placed in front of a word or phrase on the website twitter in order to search for common tweets.

The word ‘hashtag’ is, like many neologisms, a product of the technological age. The words ‘hash’ and ‘tag’ have been compounded together in order to form a word that describes a symbol used to precede the word, phrase, or link. The hashtag is used on twitter in order to track the frequency of tweets about a certain topic.
Etymology : A compounding of the word ‘hash’ - the name for the symbol ‘#,’ and the word ‘tag’ - a word, phrase, or link to another webpage.
