Quitters

Hunger. Socks that have lost their elasticity.
 
Used then describing old socks that no longer stay on correctly. Because socks use elastic to keep their shape and that elastic wears down over time, the socks are know to have “quit.”
Etymology : It is a metaphor for socks that loose their elasticity. Came about because socks that loose their elasticity are said to have “quit.” Meaning that the elastic “quit” working and the socks now don’t stay up.
