FOB

noun; acronym
an immigrant, usually of Asian descent, that arrives at the United States and is usually characterized by a thick accent. FOBs generally have very thick, distinguishable accents and retain their conservative Asian traditions and values. FOBs are easily recognizable for their awkward behavior and culture attributed to various factors from clothing, dialect, or food. The speaker was looking for a creative, clever way to describe a certain class and type of immigrants of Asian descent that are easily recognizable with heavy accents. This offers the speaker a distinction between immigrants that have already assimilated into the American culture. The speaker is clearly discriminating against immigrants that lack an ‘American’ dialect. The speaker believes that people who speak broken English are ignorant immigrants. ‘FOB’ is a generally derogatory term that implies that people with speech intonation problems are merely immigrants without any formal acculturation into America. Immigrants simply wish to be accepted by the American population, and they see this term as an offensive label comparable to the N word for African-Americans. The speaker thought that she would be comical by making fun of foreign accents. Fresh Off the Boat is used to reflect and make light of the population of impoverished, desperate Asians from various countries like China and Cambodia. For example, in the Vietnam War, many people sought to escape the communist revolution by boarding small, flimsy boats headed towards America, the land of democracy. If an immigrant is fresh off the boat, he is a hopeless outsider that has not become assimilated into the American culture. Ironically, the speaker was an Asian daughter of immigrants, so she used FOB in a mocking, condescending manner to place a label on a person. As a result, FOBs are awkward people who just hope to earn a stake of the American dream yet they are classified into a certain class of people.
