lol (ironically)

acronym for "Laughing Out Loud"; ironical interjection; "Laugh O Laugh"
Used to express unconcern and general lack of interest.

The definition of this word is counterintuitive to the word's most frequently cited definition. Like the typical "LOL," the term is most frequently used in Internet text messaging. In its most theoretical sense, "lol" might indeed stand for "laughing out loud," but in practice a better way to define its true intention might be "I don't care the heck you say." The term is usually used when one does not know how to respond to a preceding statement, especially when the statement is made in a serious tone and the maker of that statement is expecting some sort of a meaningful reply. A "lol" is used as a reply when the answerer is unable to meet that expectation, perhaps for the sake of simplicity: "lol (I don't get what the heck you're saying)."
Etymology : From the acronym LOL, an abbreviation for "laughing out loud"
