hihi

compounding duplication of "hi"; interjection
Used as a greeting toward a friend

The duplication seems to be symbolic of excitement, when the speaker is unable to contain the excitement of having met that friend and is unwilling to resort to a simple "hi." The occurrence of duplication in word formation is rather rare in English, but occurs more frequently in some other languages. One of the roles for duplication is for emphasis, and this seems to be the case here.
Etymology : Duplication of the root "hi"
