plank

metaphor and derivation; verb
to pose stiff like a plank and take a picture; a contest to see who can get the funniest/most unique picture this way

Created as a game in Australia which spread to the US. The point was to take pictures and post them of a person going stiff, metaphorically like a plank, and take a picture. The term planking was coined as a way to quickly express the idea that one was trying to take a picture of themselves as a plank.
Etymology : metaphor from plank where the body resembles the shape and stiffness of a plank, as well as a derivation to change it to verb form
