Playing the quarterback position. I have no idea why this word came out of the announcer’s mouth because it sounded odd right away. It was an example of a word that clearly shouldn’t have –ing just tossed on. However, that is how neologisms form I suppose.
Etymology : Adding a verb making morpheme to a noun in order to make the action associated with the noun one word. Adding ing makes the noun, quarterback, a present tense verb.
