one-up

verb; slang
to improve on an idea of another for the purpose of being better than that person.

This word could have arisen from the metonymic relation ship between the items on a list and having this list order from best to worst, from top to bottom. Therefore if someone has a better idea they would be one above the person before.
Etymology : combination of the words one, meaning singular, and up, meaning above.
