beast

noun; analogy
A master at something, someone who has exceptional skills. My suitemate commonly uses this word as a compliment. The meaning changed from having a negative meaning, a savage animal, to having a positive meaning, someone with exceptional skills. This semantic shift pattern is common with other slang terms, especially in the skater and surfer community. For example, the expression, “That’s sick” has come to mean ‘impressive; risky.’ I think this semantic process occurs because in the skater and surfer communities, being risky and savage-like is looked upon favorably and equated with having good skills.

Have you met this guy yet? He is a beast on the guitar.
Etymology : From Old French beste, from Latin bestia 'an animal without reason , a brute, beast'
