This phrase has undergone a meliorative process from one referring to male reproductive organs to bulking up in general. It can now be used even between friends, especially males, to tease about working out more often than usual.
Etymology : Comes from the Old English, gyrdon, which means girdle, specifically referring to a horse's saddle belt that would encircle the horse.
