extended, more common noun phrase
to insult or "call out" someone openly
 
This term is a metaphorical extension from the physical gun shot to the head, fatally wounding the recipient. The extension is used to mean an emotional "wound" that could be caused by verbally insulting someone.
Etymology : From the word shot, first used in the sixteenth century meaning to shoot with firearms.
