the one at the very top of a group
 
This term is used as a colloquial meaning of the term king, meaning the ruler of a country. The modern meaning, especially in the college community has a narrowed meaning of someone who stands out as the head of a group, if the head is a male.
Etymology : King is a Germanic word, first used in 855 to mean the monarch of an area or "kingdom."
