hackathon

noun blend
An event typically held by universities and software companies for people to get together and rapidly prototype a project that exhibits creativity, usefulness, innovation, or a combination thereof. The event usually spans 24 - 48 hours of the weekend. Participants typically do not sleep as working on their project takes the entire time of the event.

During the last hackathon I attended, I created a Google Glass application that lets you remote control presentations and see the slides and presenter notes through the Glass display.
Etymology : A blend of the word hack and marathon
