Stalking

verb
The act of looking thoroughly looking through the Facebook profile of a new or desired friend in an effort to look at old photos and find out life details on a person.
 
Usually used to determine interests for conversation starters the next time the “stalker” meets the acquaintance. In this case, stalker loses its creepy overtones in favor of a more friendly vibe.
Etymology : A metaphor for the verb "to stalk" as in to observe very closely
