tbt

noun; other word formation type Initialism for Throwback Thursday so pronounced by the letters separately t-b-t. Created originally through alliteration with the T consonant in Throwback and Thursday. Also the repetition of the "th" sound made Thursday the optimal day for this practice, as a simple alliteration with Tuesday would not have the same affect.
Tbt is an initialism for "Throwback Thursday", meaning that on specific social media websites, such as Instagram or Facebook, an older picture is posted on Thursday's. The type of picture is generally an older (weeks, months, or years old) picture that is posted to invoke memories or other types of reactions such as laughter or sadness. The picture does not always have to be posted on Thursday's, as people want to post old pictures any time of the week. Throwback is in reference to a picture that is deep in the past or a "throwback", as in throwing it way back in time, with throw meaning look, so it is a snapshot of an old picture.

"That tbt you posted was awesome, you guys were so little!"
Etymology : Created from Throwback Thursday in the social media era, namely the Instagram era, which started in late 2010. Throwback is a compound with throw and back, originally used in 1888 with the meaning of a reversion to an ancestral type or character. Throw comes from the PIE root *tere meaning to rub, turn, rub by turning, or bore. From Proto-Germaning *thræ which has been formed from Old Saxon thraian, from Middle Dutch dræyen, from Dutch draaien, from German, drehen meaning to turn, twist. From Latin terere meaning to rub, thresh, grind, wear away and from Old English þrawan meaning to twist, turn writhe. Back comes from Proto-Germanic *bakam, constructed from Old Saxon and Middle Dutch bak and Old Frisian bek. Also comes from Old English bæc meaning back.
