acronym for Graphics Interchange Format. used to refer to compressed storing of a picture that have a function of being made into a small moving picture. now it is usually used to refer to moving pictures.
 
it underwent narrowing since what we now refer to as gif is one kind of what used to be "gif".
Etymology : acronym of "Graphics Interchange Format".
