crowdfunding

noun; compounding
The collective effort of individuals who network and pool their money, usually via the Internet, to support efforts initiated by other people or organizations

"We are trying to increase our social media presence prior to the start of our crowdfunding campaign."
Etymology : Compound composed of free root crowd and root campaign (from French campagne). It is believed to have originated from the broader concept of crowdsourcing, which describes the process of accomplishing a set goal through contributions from a large group of people on the Internet, rather than from traditional employees through centralized efforts.
