shade

noun; derivation
a derogatory comment or comments.

This word is typically used in the idiomatic phrase “throwing shade” or “spitting shade.” Shade is used metaphorically from its original meaning of shadow. It likens the sad mood of the recipient of shade to the darkness of shadows – an emotionally cast shadow. Shade is used predominantly in the hip hop community, but has spread to colloquial usage. This word was probably used in a lyric that needed to rhyme, and the lyricist was able to do so using this metaphor. Example: Damn, I’m just sitting here doing homework, and you’re over there throwing shade at me for no reason.
Etymology : Shade is an alternative meaning of the word root shade.
