Dank #3

adjective; zero derivation
Although the word still maintains its original definition it has taken on a new class of meaning when describing a certain aspect of certain category of a jokes or actions.

The actual meaning is hard to describe but the general idea is that a ‘dank’ joke is one that is only funny due to the repetition and overuse of a certain phrase or image so far past the point of it not being funny anymore that the mere utterance of the phrase is in itself a joke. This new usage of the word is probably linked with the way that certain internet communities used marijuana paraphernalia increasingly in a mocking tone and previously the term ‘dank’ was used to describe the quality and odor of marijuana. Therefore, the more ‘dank’ a joke was the more it relied on the comedy behind the over-repetition of certain stereotypical aspects of various aspects of marijuana culture. Eventually this style of joke moved away from marijuana culture and onto any seemingly random aspect of pretty much anything. This included the artifacts of image compression, the over clarification of the superiority of trebuchets over catapults, the over sexualization and intense admiration of Shrek, and many thousands of various ‘dank’ jokes.
Etymology : A conversion or zero derivation from the previous use of dank which described the smell of marijuana or the smell associated with moistness.
Source : “Dude one of the dankest types of jokes is one that uses a counterweight to launch 90 kilogram stone projectiles over 300 meters.” (Me to my roommate when I discovered trebuchet memes, 9/11/2016)
