- It is hard to classify how exactly tbt is used because half of the time it is used to indicate a throwback the other half of the time it is used completely illogically as a joke about how much we say it. Also if we assume that it stands for ‘throwback to’ then the usage is technically incorrect as most of the time it is used as ‘tbt to ___’ which is redundant, like saying atm machine. Tbt can also be used as a response to someone else, for example: “hey remember that thing!?” (Exclaiming): “Yo, TBT!”

An acronym that originally meant ‘throwback Thursday’ but is now used to mean ‘throwback to’ or to recognize a reference that someone made to some memorable action or situation.
Etymology : The acronym is formed by taking the beginning of the first two syllables in ‘throwback’ (tb) and the first letter of either ‘Thursday’ or ‘to’ in a similar style to lol, mfw, or hmu.
