The word is most likely a blend of confuzzled, which is derives from confused, and contributes bewilderment to the meaning, and bum, a noun used to describe someone who travels around and does not have a permanent home or job. Therefore, one who is bumfuzzled is more than confused; they are bewildered to the point where they feel thy have lost their footing or are now confused about that place or state in life (just as a bum does not have a particular place to call their own).
