rip2

acronym; semantic broadening
“Rip” is an acronym and a contraction of a phrase, as well as an example of semantic broadening. It can be used to refer to the literal or metaphorical death of pretty much anything. To understand the large scope that the word now encompasses, rip can be used, for example, to refer to your GPA dying, after you did badly on an exam. Furthermore, there are cases where it is not even clear what seems to be dying, though if you stretch your imagination enough, you can almost always point to the death of something, that accompanies the use of the word.
Etymology : “RIP” was originally an abbreviation of “Rest in Peace”, used to refer to someone that passed away. “Rip” is now used as an acronym, and its meaning has broadened, as mentioned above, to mean the literal or metaphorical death of pretty much anything.
