An ostensible apology for the sake of appeasing, rather than one out of sincerity.
 
Fauxpology was most likely coined as a response to fake apologies, and is used to indicate the low sincerity of some apologies Faux carries a connotation of inauthenticity, giving fauxpology negative connotations.
