visual AIDS

noun; compounding
a fictional disease of the eye implying that the patient has just watched or seen something terrible or even scarring

The term “visual aids” has referred to things that can be seen during a presentation to provide visual stimulation and aid in the presentation itself, so this word is a play on that phrase too. AIDS currently has no cure and this acquiring visual AIDS may be somehow permanent, causing whatever you saw to be imprinted on the mind.
Etymology : visual ‘relating to vision’ + AIDS ‘disease’
