- It is a popular word, typically used in a sarcastic manner by the person in the textlationship. For example, a friend could say: “So how’s your relationship with that guy going?” and you would reply: “Relationship. You mean textlationship.” It is often accompanied by an eye roll or a subtle chuckle. However, it can also take on a negative connotation and be used to make fun of a person who exaggerates her relationship status. When it is used in this manner, it almost always refers to someone who tends to become overly emotional and prematurely involved in relationships. It is used to specify the type of relationship and serves as an intermediate stage resting between just friends and officially dating. With the advent of cell phones, people can communicate via text without ever meeting or talking on the phone, so in part, this word was created to keep up with technological changes. It informally resembles the concept of a pen-pal. However, textlationship is primarily used as verbal slang.
