- Instead of sending a message to the “group message” or “group text,” you can send a message to the “groupme.” The term began as the name of an app used to create group messages but has broadened to just a general noun. “Groupme” was likely chosen as the name of the app because it’s catchy and easy to say, and also gets the point across — the app puts you in groups where you can chat with your friends. The usage of groupme instead of something like group message likely came about because it’s easier to say and, at least on Rice’s campus, is a term that everyone understands because virtually every student on campus has a Groupme account.

A word for “group message”
Etymology : Since the creation of the app Groupme, the term has broadened to mean any kind of group message, since Groupme has become very popular and most of people’s group messages (especially at Rice) occur on the app itself.
