bail

verb; zero derivation
To leave abruptly, abandon, or not show up when you’re expected.

Can be used in the same context as the reanalysed word ‘ditch’. It has a negative connotation, and people who bail often are viewed poorly. A person can give a brief forewarning and leave soon after and that would still be considered bailing if they were expected to stay longer.
Etymology : zero derivation of the word bail
