woke (1)

adjective; zero derivation
Being aware and empathetic.

Describes a person who is not only aware of what’s going on in their own community, but also in other communities and can accept and empathize with people whose experiences might be different from their own. A person is considered woke if they have an understanding marginalized or discriminated voices on taboo or controversial topics and current affairs. The word has very positive connotations with it, as someone who is woke is not seen as ignorant and passive but knowledgeable and informed on many perspectives. The word woke doesn’t mean aware in the past tense though, as the word itself may suggest. This was probably done to suggest that it’s a slang word. Woke is widely used in all sorts of media and in everyday spoken and written English.
