brush

verb; abbreviation
prepare oneself for going to bed

this word is a shorthand for getting ready for bed, usually used in reference to leaving or stopping the current activity to retire for the night. It is a case of synecdoche, in which one step of the process of preparing for bed stands for the whole process. It follows the pattern of many personal hygiene-related terms (ex. bathroom, restroom) in being a euphemism by referring to the least taboo element and ignoring shower- or toilet-related activities.
Etymology : brush is a shortening of the idea of “brush my teeth and get ready for bed” and is in that sense an abbreviation.
