Using online means to trick a person into revealing information which will allow access to personal information.
 
In widespread use. The beginning ‘ph’ in phish could originate from a technology related word such as phone, and applied to this word because the criminals use technology to seek information through trickery, as though fishing in a pond. This is a metaphor, as the perpetrators are “fishing” for easily duped targets.
Etymology : A respelling of the word fishing “catching fish.”
